Camp Vamonos! is going into its 13th year of offering summer care to Austin's children! CV! is a local, homegrown business located in a private home in the Crestview neighborhood in north-central Austin and is run by a mom, Megan Baker, with 25 years of experience working with children and teens.
Camp Vamonos! boasts a backyard "playground" featuring: a climbing dome, a treehouse/slide, a zipline, a slackline, a climbing wall, a playhouse, a punching bag, a foosball table, a gazebo, and big tubular loose parts. The CV! mascot is a beautiful Great Pyrnees/Lab mix named Greta.
The day at Camp Vamonos! is intentionally unstructured so that kids can make decisions, take normal childhood risks, and play and make friends with children older and younger than themselves. It's a free range, low-tech, play-based experience that also encourages kids to be responsible for their communities. We have planted trees in our neighborhood and built a bench for a nearby traffic island.
Throughout the summer we do field trips using public transit; we go to UT, downtown, the Cathedral of Junk, and other great Austin spots. When we're at the house, we play with "loose parts" (https://earlyimpactlearning.com/14-benefits-of-loose-parts-play-with-exa...); enjoy board and card games and low-tech toys; bake and do kitchen science; make science toys; watch classic films like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton; create arts and crafts; and make friends of all ages.
