MLK Essay and Video Contest
Calling All LISD Students: Join the 2025 MLK Day Essay and Video Contest!
The City of Leander and Leander ISD are thrilled to announce our annual essay and video contest honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s theme, “Marching Towards A Better Tomorrow,” invites you to reflect on how you can make a positive impact in your community and beyond.
Dr. King and the civil rights movement taught us that ordinary people taking extraordinary action can change the world. We invite all Leander ISD students to share how they are “Marching Towards A Better Tomorrow” by submitting either a written essay or a recorded video by December 31, 2024.
This contest is a wonderful opportunity to explore Dr. King’s messages, showcase your creativity, and practice the skills you’ve learned in the classroom. Plus, more than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded to the top entries!

Middle and High School Students
Dr. King challenged each of us to work toward equality, justice, and peace. After learning about Dr. King and the civil rights movement (through books, videos, or podcasts), consider the following prompts for your essay or video:
-
Reflect: What is a challenge in your school or community that needs to change? How can your actions contribute to long-term improvements?
-
Inspire: How does the theme "Marching Towards A Better Tomorrow" motivate you to create a lasting legacy? How do you envision carrying that forward?
Submission Requirements:
-
Essays: Must be original, typed, and double-spaced. High school essays should not exceed 1,000 words; middle school essays should not exceed 500 words.
-
Videos: Must be 60–120 seconds and can be individual or group entries. Students may submit both an essay and a video.
Include a cover sheet with the student’s name, school, grade level, phone number, and email (this information should not appear in the essay or headers/footers).
Elementary Students
Dr. King believed in making the world better for everyone. Think about his message and consider the following prompts for your essay or video:
-
Imagine: If you could take one big action and one small action to improve your school or neighborhood, what would they be?
-
Create: How will your actions make your community kinder, fairer, or more peaceful?
Submission Requirements:
-
Writing Samples: Should not exceed one side of a page (typed or handwritten) and can include illustrations or original artwork.
-
Videos: Must be 30–120 seconds and can be individual or group entries. Students may submit both a written entry and a video.
Include a cover sheet with the student’s name, school, grade level, phone number, and email (this information should not appear in the essay or headers/footers).
We can’t wait to see how you’re “Marching Towards A Better Tomorrow.” Your voice and vision are vital as we work together to honor Dr. King’s legacy and make a difference in our community. Let’s celebrate the power of hope, action, and unity—starting with you!
