Held since 2006, SMART camps have now been extended to include middle schoolers! The new age ranges are as follows:
- SMART Camps: for rising 5th-7th graders
- SMARTies Camps: for rising 2nd-4th graders
Students will begin the week with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) icebreaker to help the students get to know their cohort (of about 20 students) in a non-awkward and fun way, as well as to introduce them to fundamental engineering principles. Then, we will go over the kits, and present the theme of the camp competition, including what objectives the robots need to fulfill. Students will be placed into small groups with experienced LASA Robotics student mentors and will begin brainstorming strategy, design, and construction of the robot. Over the next few days, students will build, code, and test their robots. Both kit types (LEGO and VEX) are easy to learn while being very versatile, and student mentors will be there throughout the entire process. Their journey at our SMART camps will culminate in a friendly and fun competition between teams on the final day, where families are welcome to attend to cheer on their students.
