The Sunday Morning Math Circle will be in room 5.104 of Robert Lee Moore Hall on the campus of UT on Sunday Feb 10, 12-2pm. The event is absolutely free and will feature a talk by Rok Gregoric, a PhD student at the University of Texas, who will give a talk on how to visualize the fourth dimension (and beyond!) This event is targeted for 6th-12th graders and requires no mathematical prerequisites to be enjoyed!
The specific details of the talk are: These days, everybody knows that we live in a 4-dimensional universe, with 3 dimensions of space and 1 dimension of time. But what does the notion of "dimension" really mean? Come to this meeting of SMMG to find out!! We will talk about the limitations of one-dimensional world-views, about what mathematicians mean when we talk about "n-dimensional space for any n", and why tying your shoelaces would be a very difficult task if you lived in a universe with four spacial dimensions!
