UT PREP 1 is a 5-week summer academic enrichment program for students currently in 6th or 7th grade in the Austin community who have an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Courses include Logic, Problem Solving, Engineering, and College and Career Awareness. Only 60 seats are open to the public. There are no scholarships for these 60 seats.
How are participants chosen? To qualify for UT PREP 1, students must have a 90 average or higher in regular science, math, and English courses, with an 85 or higher allowed for advanced coursework. To apply, students will submit grade reports for the 2019-2020 school year containing at least two grading periods, an application, a letter of recommendation from a mathematics or science teacher, and a one page essay by applicant using the application questions as a guideline, and unedited by family, teacher, or any other individual.
Each student receives individual attention from a Master Teacher and several UT student interns. During their camp time, students will take field trips and eat lunch in common areas alongside UT students, explore different places on campus, swim in the pool, and play sports in the gym at UT. Every summer of UT PREP can also count as one high school CTE credit, as approved by the Texas Education Agency.
